Issues Forum: Katz Development at Westport & Main

Please join us on Tuesday, March 16 from 6-7:30 p.m. for a civic discussion to learn more about one of Kansas City’s iconic National Historic Register buildings: Katz Drug Store at Main and Westport Road and the proposed associated development project.

Our discussion will include:

— Lux Living: Katz Drug Store project overview

— Does the developer need tax incentives for the Katz project?

— How will the historic landmark be preserved?

— How does this project serve housing needs?

— What is the cost to the KC School District, Metro Community Colleges, community mental services, the library, the blind, and the disabled?

— Our City’s values, using the LWV Citizen Benefit Scorecard

We have invited representatives of Lux Living (www.LuxLiving.co), the Katz Building developer to participate in the forum.

Confirmed speakers include Jennie Walters, Council for neighborhoods; Janice Bolin, Kansas City Public Library; Angie Lile, with KC TIF Watch; Christopher McKinney, Urban Neighborhood Initiative (UNI). Sandy Eeds (he, him), LWV president, will moderate. Speakers will have an opportunity to respond to questions from the audience.

The Katz Building (above) is on the National Register of Historic Places. Lux Living plans call for a six-story building of 192 one-bedroom and studio apartments with a swimming pool on the roof of the old drug store portion. The project is valued at $50-$70 million.
